The Art Program
In our choice-based environment, students are treated like real artists. They learn about many different techniques, materials, and Art History movements, and are then free to explore their own interests and ideas through individual projects of their own choosing. This philosophy of teaching is called Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB).
The Year
As the year progresses, the students will cover a wide variety of media and techniques while immersing themselves in Art History. The studio lessons have a scaffolded design, in which students of each age learn skills to build upon in the next level of schooling to make even stronger, dynamic artwork as they grow as artists. In Art class, we also learn how to talk and write about our artwork and that of others.
The Levels
Each Montessori level will be focusing on several themes throughout the year:
-
Thematic projects focusing on: art materials - proper use and care; literature and Visual Art; a variety of technique (Primary)
-
The elements of art – line, color, texture, etc. (Lower Elementary)
-
The principles of design – harmony, balance, emphasis, etc. (Upper Elementary)
The Goal
My goal for this year is for the students to not only enjoy their art making experience within the studio setting, but also to walk away with an ability to create strong works of art of which they can be truly proud!
